3D exploration of 2D

This is a very interesting take on a famous piece of 2D art- Picasso’s Guernica. (via motionagrapher)
I doubt that Picasso ever imagined that this piece would be viewed in this manner. This makes it even more fascinating to me because someone has taken someone else’s art and transformed it by changing the medium into another piece of art.
If you have nothing else to do today, ponder how 71 years from now people will be reinterpretting current art pieces into new mediums….

Here’s a little teaser timelapse of the setup for something that we are working on:
You’ll have to stay tuned to see what we are doing with it.

I saw this piece (bigger here- click on header video) via Motionographer and had to check out the team, 72andSunny, that made it. I stumbled across this piece they did, which I find simply amazing, such a lo-tech/high yield concept.
Message to bosses of creative professionals:
Posted by will | Filed under Christianity, Creativity, Thoughts
It doesn’t matter if you are a creative professional yourself or if you are so uncreative, you couldn’t pick out your clothes without your wife here are a few things that you should keep in mind when managing creative people:
- You can never give creative people enough time to “play” and just be creative
- Give them as many relevant opportunities as you can to allow them to be inspired, whether that means:
- Magazines related to their field
- Concerts, art galleries, CDs, etc.
- Calling or traveling to network with other people in the same field
- Give them irrelevant opportunities to be inspired. You never know where they might get the next idea that furthers The Kingdom.
- If they seem like they are being reclusive it has nothing to do with you, they are probably hard at work on something and just don’t want their creative process interrupted.
- If they don’t get to work at exactly 9:00 or whatever your usual “work hours” are don’t worry, creativity is not a 9-5 process, they may have been up into the wee hours of the night working on something.
- If you serve as the interpreter going between the client (e.g. senior pastor) and the creative team, their ability to execute the idea or concept, their execution can only be as strong as your communication
- If they have just finished with a huge project give them some time out of the office, seeing the same 4 walls they have staring at for long hours doesn’t inspire any new creative ideas.
I didn’t write this as a “secret” note to my boss or even my boss’s boss, they both have all these things down very well.
I wrote this as message to anybody that has recently been thrown into the role of managing creative professionals or for someone that has struggled with relating to their creative people. I will be the first to admit that creative people like myself are a different breed and therefore necessitate different management than your usual office worker.
This sounds familiar

PopPhoto.com has a story on their site, and in their magazine about the crossover between photography and video. Parts of the story resonate with me being that I started in photography and then picked up a video camera and now am lucky enough to be able to do both. They both make you more creative in doing the other. If photography or video aren’t your cup of tea, what other hobbies, interests or jobs do you have that can push you to be better in another hobby, interest or job?

Dead or Alive Video

There have been quite a few questions about how we did the Dead or Alive video (below, but with added live footage) for the Unleash conference. If you were in the Production Breakout at Unleash you will recall Ken talking how sometimes we pitch video ideas to Perry and our senior management team and sometimes Perry will come to us with a clearly defined idea of what he wants. In the case of the Dead or Alive video he came to us with a fairly complete idea of what he wanted.
See the first notes mainly Shane, our creative arts pastor and my notes (warning legibility is questionable and I started taking notes from the second ideas on the first). Later after talking to Perry a little more, Shane came back with mainly the same ideas, but a few new things.
Lee gave me a reference click of him strumming the guitar and singing the words along with a metronome beat that we send to the in-ear monitors that the band wears while playing in order to keep them on tempo.
I used Handbrake and Mpeg Streamclip to rip the Passion DVD footage into a .mov file. I then took the DVD footage into Final Cut Pro and began to lay down the pieces that Perry had asked for. After getting the key pieces Perry wanted in place, I started finding and laying in the other scenes that were needed in order to convey the overall message that Perry needed. In addition to the Passion footage, I added in the dirt road footage because of the feel and meaning that it added to the piece.
Next, I showed the firest cut to Perry to get his feedback. He was fine with everything except for when the beating started and how long it lasted. Those two things did not fit with the vision that God had given him for this piece. Personally, I liked the first version just fine, but God did not give me the message to preach at Unleash, and therefore I did not know what the video should look like to support that message. As I blogged about previously, it is not about my personal preference it is about reaching people for Jesus and I know that Perry knows that it is not about his personal preference, it is about what God wants. I trust Perry’s leadership and know that if he needs a video a certain way in order to make the point that God has told him to make, then I will create the video in such a manner.
After getting that feedback, I then changed that part of the video, tightened some stuff up and added in the scripture passages that were composited by the talented Ben Coleman.
As a side note, I love the comradery that we have as a staff, if you don’t believe it, check out this snipit out of the reference click from Lee, I was rolling on the ground when I caught that part.
Hopefully, this helps explains how we make a video that Perry has a direct vision for happen. Let me know if you have any further questions.
